Liposuction, which is also known as fat removal, is the vacuuming process of fat tissue that is located right under the skin surface. It is used to reduce fat in any region of the body.
Can liposuction be used to lose weight?
This method is used to reduce regional fat tissue surgically, in that sense it is a partially effective weight loss method. Liposuction shouldn’t be seen as an alternative for losing weight but it is a method to reduce fat deposits in a limited area that does not respond to diet and exercise.
Thanks to modern advanced anesthesia and surgery technologies, Prof. Dr. Murat Türegün carries out mega liposuction procedures that remove up to 14 liters of fat in one session. This amount will give the patient the appearance as if he/she had lost 20-25 kg.
Who is the most suitable candidate for liposuction?
The most visible results are obtained in people with localized fat excess. Lightly overweight patients may benefit most from Liposuction , so it is best to be of normal weight or close to normal. Quality skin with good elasticity will help to adapt to the new shape of the body after the excess fat has been removed.

When is liposuction not possible?
Liposuction cannot be carried out, if the patient underwent surgery in that region a short while ago, if there is disturbance in blood circulation in that area or if the patient has a lung or heart condition. In such cases the doctor must be informed and the surgery postponed.
To which areas of the body can liposuction be applied?
Liposuction can be applied to many different areas in the body. Yes, the process is very short and effortless. If there is excess fat in the skin under the chin and if the skin under the chin is tight, it is possible to create a more beautiful, angled, shaped and youthful appearance just by vacuuming. But if the neck skin is lose and sagging and if there is excess fat, vacuuming alone is not enough to obtain the desired appearance. In such cases the doctor generally suggests a face and neck lift instead or together with the vacuuming process.
What kind of problems can occur after liposuction?
The incisions made for the procedure are very small. They are only half a centimeter long, scarring is minimal and almost not visible. If the skin of the area in question has pouches, waves or was exposed to the sun for too long, permanent changes in pigmentation (brown spots) may be possible in rare cases. In cases of asymmetry (uneven contour or form), which is very rare, a second surgery may be required.
How much fat can be vacuumed?
If the liposuction to be carried out is not very extensive, the amount of fat and liquid to be removed depends on the experience of the doctor, the patient’s health status, body area and surgical procedure.
What kind of anesthesia is used?
Liposuction is carried out under anesthesia and sedation. The patient is partially awake but doesn’t feel any pain. If the application is planned for a wide area or for several areas at once, the procedure will be carried out under general anesthesia. In this case, the patient will sleep during the operation.
How long does liposuction take?
The surgery takes 1-2 hours but depending on the size of the area and amount to be vacuumed the duration may be extended from half an hour to several hours.
How is liposuction carried out?
In order to start the procedure, small incisions are made in order to insert the small suction tubes called “cannula” into the skin . The other end of the cannula is connected to a strong suction machine. The doctor moves the cannula under the skin and thus cuts the fat, which is suctioned out. By entering different areas the area surface gains a smoother appearance. To increase the fat amount to be removed it may be possible to do some extra incisions in some areas.
What happens after liposuction?
Generally corsets are used to avoid hemorrhage and edema in the vacuumed area. At the same time it helps the body to gain its new shape. The corset also reduces the patient’s pain a little bit and it makes it easier to move around. The corset may need to be worn continuously for a month, according to the doctor’s recommendation, after which it may only be necessary during the day. Also antibiotics are used against the risk of infection.

When is the healing process complete?
1-2 months after Liposuction most of the swelling and color changes disappear but it may take up to 6 months until all the swelling is gone. During this time the doctor will check-up on the patient and monitor the changes in order to decide if an additional intervention is necessary or not.
Will the fat, removed by liposuction, come back?
If the patient pays attention to his/her diet and if he/she exercises regularly, the results may be permanent. But if the patient gains weight, the fat will distribute throughout the whole body and not only the old problem regions. Many patients are satisfied with the results of liposuction, they feel more comfortable in new and different clothes. As long as the expectations are realistic the patient will be satisfied with the new image.
